There are many excellent executive-style German cars on the automotive market – and the new Audi A5 Sportback is just one of them.
The state-of-the-art 2017 A5 Sportback is sturdily constructed, but it has a discernment about it that warms the cockles of the heart.
Audis are unpretentious vehicles – manufactured for the driver who appreciates a car, but also wants a significant commuting machine. And let’s not prevaricate – the four circles do say something about your station in life.
The second-coming of the Audi A5 Sportback, which came on the scene at the beginning of 2017, comes with all the safety equipment you’d envisage. And this Audi A5, like its brethren, has been produced to take a thrashing. This means it’s sure to withstand the test of time.
On the open road, the Audi is a splendid piece of kit. The 2017 A5 Sportback, reviewed here in S line 2.0 TDI quattro 190PS S tronic semblance, supplies a considerable 190PS and 400Nm of torque. It will dash past 62mph from a standing start in 7.4 seconds, and will max out at 146mph.
The new A5 Sportback’s tiptronic transmission is a joy to use. The eight-speed ‘box is so slick and aids the Audi’s efficiency gains by freewheeling when you lift off the accelerator. When the A5 pulls hard, you’re thrust agreeably into your seat. And when you steer into bends hard, you won’t fret because, thanks to the car’s quattro four-wheel drive, the Sportback adheres to the blacktop like glue.
The renewed A5 Sportback has grown noticeably inside. The interior length has sprouted 17mm, the shoulder space in the front by 11mm, and the knee room in the back by 24mm. The elegant materials and build quality in the cabin are indisputably representative of Audi. The neat design of the instrument panel generates a sense of openness. Undeniably, there is space for four adults to sit blithely. The elective ambient lighting induces an appropriate interior atmosphere too.
With 480 litres of baggage room, the 2017 A5 Sportback’s boot is among the largest in its market division. The quadrilateral-shaped arrangement of the load bay makes it exceptional in terms of everyday use. Moreover, the rear seat back divides 40:20:40 – and with the seats down, the new Audi A5 Sportback can swallow 1,300 litres worth of gear.
Behind the steering wheel, everything is instinctual. As a substitute to the factory-fitted analogue instrument gauges, the Audi virtual cockpit, with its assorted display choices, brings you added expediency. The high-resolution 12.3-inch offers deeply detailed graphics. There’s also a head-up display that casts all pertinent information onto the windscreen as straightforward digits and symbols. This fundamentally ensures you keep your eyes on the road at all times as you indulge in the A5’s power.
The A5 Sportback has almost too many other cabin playthings to catalogue. Audi’s top infotainment system is MMI navigation plus with MMI touch. It contains features such as 10 GB of flash storage, Audi connect services and a DVD drive. Audi MMI navigation plus works in collaboration with the car’s assistance and safety systems. The smartphone interface assimilates iOS and Android smartphones in an environment purposely created for them in the MMI. The telephone box connects phones to the on-board transmitter to provide first-class reception quality. The Bang & Olufsen Sound System, with 3D sound, gives you the sense of being in a concert hall. Its amplifier provides 755 watts of breath-taking power to 19 speakers.
If the new Audi A5 Sportback’s flair for nourishing the senses is not quote enough, its average fuel efficiency figure of 62.8mpg is to be praised. Driving on assorted roads around Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire for an hour, I achieved an average of 56mpg. That’s not at all bad, considering how heavy footed I can be.
Anticipate paying £38,970 for the new A5 Sportback S line 2.0 TDI quattro 190PS S tronic. It’s relatively affordable at first glance, but you could end up digging a lot deeper into your pockets if you pander to Audi’s options inventory. For instance, my review car’s overall price-tag came to £48,455. Nevertheless, how much you squander on a well-manufactured, refined car like the new Audi A5 Sportback is your privilege.
